Oppenheimer (2023) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture That the director turned this most devastating of stories into a riveting pop culture phenomenon without ceding one inch on its tragic dimensions is surely an achievement for the ages. There's a great movie hiding amidst all of the formal pyrotechnics. But I guess it's too much to ask for a lighter touch from a director who is about as subtle as an atomic bomb. Dayton S It's an amazing movie that repeats the history itself! My first time seeing it was the sound got ear-pierced even with the A-bomb test went off and it was gonna blow me up to smithereens. 😂 But Cillian Murphy's role was great and I'm proud of Robert Downey Jr who supported over the movie. Christopher Nolan is the best director ever! Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review izzy b Oppenheimer got its recognition for best picture of 2024 at the Oscars. I was captivated from beginning to end with Cillian Musphy's performance and his ability to capture the essence of Oppenheimer's character. FAQs

Is Oppenheimer overhyped? ›

Too much formula and very little original thought. You may not like Oppenheimer, but at least it's not Out of Africa. I think there's a pretty good film in there, just that it would only be 2 hours long. The shifting timelines added little for me, and the Florence Pugh storyline was pretty unnecessary.

How much of Oppenheimer is true? ›

Heavily based on "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer" by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, the movie stays pretty faithful to the man's eventful, unusual life. But that doesn't mean there aren't some exaggerations or inconsistencies.

Is the Oppenheimer film too long? ›

It focuses way too much time on Oppenheimer's pre-Trinity political activity and post-Trinity kangaroo trial without a satisfactory reason to do so. The 1st and especially the overly long 3rd act needed tighter editing and the movie would have been better for it.

Has there ever been a 100% Rotten Tomato movie? ›

100 Movies lists, but there are many others and several entries with dozens of positive reviews, which are considered surprising to some experts. To date, Leave No Trace holds the site's record, with a rating of 100% and 252 positive reviews.

Is Oppenheimer or Barbie rated higher? ›

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Greta Gerwig's Barbie starring Margot Robbie as the doll icon has a very fashionable 89 percent positive score, while Christopher Nolan's historical drama Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy is just slightly more explosive at 92 percent.

Why was Oppenheimer so skinny? ›

“I had to lose quite a bit of weight, and we worked with the costume and tailoring; he was very slim, almost emaciated, existed on martinis and cigarettes.” Murphy added, “He had these really bright eyes and I wanted to give him this wide-eyed look, so we worked on his silhouette and expressions a lot before starting."

Did Oppenheimer ever win a Nobel Prize? ›

Despite his early work on what would later become known as black holes, J. Robert Oppenheimer never won a Nobel Prize. In part, it may have been because the "father of the atomic bomb" lacked the focus of some of his colleagues and constantly moved from topic to topic.

Who was smarter Einstein or Oppenheimer? ›

J. Robert Oppenheimer's IQ Was An Estimated 135 (Compared To Einstein's 160)

What was Oppenheimer's IQ? ›

Estimates of Oppenheimer's IQ range from 150 to 190, with the most frequently cited being around 165. These scores are based on his intellectual achievements in theoretical physics. Lower estimates, like 135, and higher ones, up to 200, are anecdotal and lack reliable documentation.

What did Einstein say to Oppenheimer? ›

In the final scene, Oppenheimer asks him: “When I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world”, to which Einstein replies: “I remember it well. What of it?”. Oppenheimer replies; “I believe we did.”

Did Christopher Nolan use a real bomb in Oppenheimer movie? ›

Contrary to some absurd internet chatter, Nolan did not detonate a real atomic bomb to achieve the stunning visuals in the movie.

Why was Oppenheimer banned in Japan? ›

First Reason: It's possible that Toho-Towa decided not to release "Oppenheimer" in Japan due to various reasons, such as concerns about its portrayal of historical events or cultural sensitivities. Summarising the story: Japan has always been US allies since world war ll.

Did Oppenheimer meet Einstein? ›

Oppenheimer met Einstein for the first time in January 1932 when the latter visited Caltech as part of his round-the-world trip during 1931-32. In 1939, Einstein published a paper that argued against the existence of Black holes. Einstein used his own general theory of relativity to arrive at this conclusion.

How many Oscars did Oppenheimer win? ›

Nominated for 13 awards, Oppenheimer won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.

Did the movie Oppenheimer get good reviews? ›

“Oppenheimer” is a great achievement in formal and conceptual terms, and fully absorbing, but Nolan's filmmaking is, crucially, in service to the history that it relates.

Is Oppenheimer a top 10 movie? ›

If you're looking at the top 10 highest grossing films of the year, only one of them stands out like a sore thumb (and not just because I've put it in bold): Barbie, Super Mario, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Fast & Furious 10, a Spider-Man, The Little Mermaid, a Mission: Impossible, Elemental, and Ant-Man 3.

What is the highest percentage a movie can get and still be rotten? ›

If 60% of reviews are positive, the movie is given a “Fresh” status, but if positive reviews fall below that benchmark, it is deemed “Rotten.” A popular piece of media will typically fall between the 70-90% range, but rarely, a project will receive a 100% score.
